Frequently asked questions

Using our APIs

I just want to use an API? What are plans?

A plan is collection of API resources or subsets of resources from one or more APIs. A plan can contain a mixture of operation types from different APIs. A plan can have a common rate limit for all the resources or each resource can have a different rate limit. Rate limits specify how many requests an application is allowed to make during a specified time interval.

Use this Developer Portal to browse the different plans that are available to you and select a plan that is most suitable for your requirements. Some plans have restricted access that you must request access to use. When you submit your request, the organization is notified, the API administrator assesses your request and they might contact you for more details. Other plans are available to use straight away.

How do I see my API usage?

The numbers of requests, for different APIs, that your application has made are shown on your application page.

Click 'Apps' in the main menu and then click on your application. In the 'Product Subscriptions' table you will see all plans your application is subscribed to.

For each API contained in that plan you can see the usage compared to the rate limit of the plan.

How can I test an API?

It is possible to test an API from this Developer Portal.

When looking at the details of an API you will see a list of the operations contained in the API. This will show the verb and path to use for the operation.

If you click on the operation you will see more information about it, what parameters it might take, what it returns, what possible return codes it might use and what they mean.

There is also a 'Try' button on REST APIs which enables you to try the operation out direct from the Developer Portal.

If the API requires a client ID or a client secret for identification then you can specify these using your application credentials at the top of the 'Try' section.

What is an example of a use case for one of your APIs?

The APIs enable customer servicing use cases for domains such as Service Assurance, Change Management, Service Provisioning, and the Internet of Things.

Use Case in Action

Are your APIs following any industry standards and best practices?

Bell suite of APIs is REST based and technology agnostic. Some APIs are based on the TMForum OpenAPI reference model (Click here to visit TMF site) , thus implementing industry strength design patterns to allow simple and coherent management of any given service, and enable a rapid integration.

REST API Operations Supported
GET/ResourceGET must be used to retrieve a representation of a resource or multiple resources
POST ResourcePOST must be used to create a new resource
PATCH ResourcePATCH must be used to partially update a resource
DELETE ResourceDELETE must be used to remove a resource
Notification design patternUsage of the Publish subscribe pattern so notifications are pushed to a listener in near real-time Hub and notification event filtering
Asynchronous Operations design patternIn some use cases the modification of an attribute or a creation of a record may result in the execution of a long running transaction TransactionMonitor resource is returned so that the execution of the operation can be monitored via the GET operation

 Notification Pattern

What ITSM systems do the APIs integrate with?

Our REST APIs suite is technology and vendor agnostic.

Is communication with the APIs in Push or Pull mode?

We support both Push and Pull mode communication. However, we favor the Push mode through our notification model.

Will I be given access to a Production environment or a Sandbox environment?

Some APIs only have Sandbox access. Some other APIs only have Production access. The rest will have access to both environments. Please visit the API details pages of each API for more information.

How can I register for access to the sandbox?

Once you have reviewed our API documentation and are ready to begin, follow the link below to register and gain access to the Sandbox.

How valid is the data in Sandbox environment?

The data in Sandbox environment is fake but will follow the same structure as the data in the production environment.

Apps

How do I register an application?

When you add an application you are provided with an API Key and Secret for the application. You must supply these credentials when you call an API that requires you to authenticate your application.

To register an application click on Apps in the main menu and then click on the 'Create new app' link. Once you have provided an application name, description, etc you will be shown your application API Key and Secret.

Make a note of your API Secret because it is only displayed once.

How do I reset my application API Secret?

Your API Secret is stored encrypted so we cannot retrieve the unencrypted version to tell you the value if you forget it.

You can reset it, which will update the stored value and return the new value to you.

To do that click 'Apps' in the main menu, click on the application in question and then you can click the 'Reset' link in the 'API Secret' section.

Your new Secret will be displayed at the top of the page.

5G and MEC

What is 5G?

5G is the 5th generation of wireless technology. With full deployment over the next few years, it will enhance the lives of all Canadians. 5G connectivity will enable immersive video and gaming experiences, remote telehealth, self-driving vehicles, and new applications that will change the way we work, live and play.

What is MEC?

The term MEC, also known as "multi-access edge computing", refers to computing that enables data processing, analytics, and communication capabilities down to where the data originates - at network gateways or directly at the endpoints, i.e., the edge. The aim is to reduce latency, ensure highly efficient network operation as well as service delivery, and to offer an improved user experience. Bringing computing closer to the data source, offers greater business agility through better control and faster insights, lowers operating expenses, and results in more efficient network bandwidth support1.

What is IoT and how does it work?

Internet of Things (IoT) enables machines and devices to communicate with each other directly or through a cloud environment in order to deliver actionable data quickly.

Any hardware device from which data is received in the network is considered as a "thing" in IoT.

An IoT system works by continuously sending, receiving, and analyzing data in a feedback loop. Analysis is performed by either humans or artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), in real time.

What areas are covered by 5G? 4G?

Covering over 99% of the population, Bell offers more coverage with access to the largest 4G network in Canada. In June 2020, Bell launched 5G, the next-generation wireless technology, and through ongoing investments, 5G is now offered in select areas across Canada. As we continue to roll out the 5G network across Canada, we encourage you to refer to our coverage map for the latest availability. See Bell coverage map here.

What if I have Bell 5G device connected over Wi-Fi, will AWS Wavelength still be accessible?

No, the device must be connected to 5G.

How do I know if my mobile device is compatible with Bell's network?

You can check if your mobile phone is compatible with the Bell network by entering your device's 15-digit IMEI number here. If you are inquiring about a device other than a mobile phone, please contact us.

Can Internet traffic reach my Wavelength Zone?

No. Application (HTTP/HTTPS) traffic originating from the Internet will be blocked with exception to ICMP traffic. However, TCP traffic originating from the Wavelength Zone can reach both the carrier network and the Internet. A TCP/UDP request from WL to the RAN is not allowed. It must be initiated by a mobile device.

Security

How security is enforced?

Security is maintained at all layers of the integration. Bell supports TLSv1.2, 256 bit SHA2 encryption and SSL with proactive monitoring of inbound and outbound traffic. Please ensure you do not submit private data via the Sandbox API.

How do I obtain API keys?

On the Bell developer API portal, one needs to register to get access to the API. The API can only be accessed using API keys (credentials). After registration, requests will be assessed and validated by a Bell administrator. The Bell administrator will get in touch with the requestor and send a user ID, API end point and other details via email after verification. Using these credentials and API end point, the API can now be accessed.
